Movies On A Mission
As we evolve, so, it appears, does our art. In the last several years there has been an unprecedented number of movies, both feature film and documentary, that have provoked our thinking. Not only have spiritual, philosophical and environmental interests been raised, but so has a new interest in how science is backing up 'what we've been telling them all along'.
Eric DelaBarre, a television writer (Law and Order) says, "Now, more than ever, people are waking up to the notion that 'I want something different.' There is no soul to some of these (mindless action films) and people are beginning to realize that."
Just look at the amazing global mainstream interest in the movie 'The Secret'. The Law of Attraction is not new to many people, but to watch such a huge number of others suddenly become awake to it is very exciting and, to some, quite overdue.
Big budget Hollywood has recently begun to enter the waters of mission-based messages and, according to Amanda Robinson, founder of the Institute for Spiritual Enlightenment (ISELA), 'What Dreams May Come' starring Robin Williams, was the first of it's kind. Millions can be affected and inspired by a widely distributed, mainstream feature film. The smaller and less advertised independent films are often left singing to the choir, though the more of them released, the more people seem to be joining the choir.
There has always been a tension between the creative and the corporate. "Inside the system", says Robinson, "it's all about money. We must continue to build perceived value to give this genre credibility." And this genre continues to grow in the land of visual entertainment at an extraordinary rate, despite that resistance.
The filmmakers who are stepping forward and taking risks, both financial and personal, to put out these new movies deserve to be supported. They are dedicating themselves to using the medium to make a difference in people's lives and in the world.
"Mostly we are people who 'used to work' in Hollywood," says Eric DelaBarre, "but are now putting our talents to work with a single mission: to inspire those around us through filmed entertainment. I will not go back to Law and Order, sitting around a table and drumming up new and exciting ways to kill people."
And so it is... The way we can support this expansion and the moviemakers themselves, is to watch their films. Coming attractions are The Power of Now starring Jim Carrey, The Tipping Point with Leo DiCaprio, and The Alchemist with Lawrence Fishburn. For a full list of movies that fall into this category, email me and put 'Movies on a Mission' in the subject line. I'm happy to spread the word.
